This is a fantastic question and very difficult to follow in the fast world of today. But one still needs to have a point of view on all things equal, where would you want to take your product. As a PM, identifying external trends is really important, else the product remains a fast follower.

Also, it depends on the life cycle of the product as well. If the product is just launched and you are fine tuning it but don’t know what you want to do with it in 5 years, it sounds something is not right. Having a plan with 50% data is always better than waiting for 100% predictability before having this plan.
